Royal Tioga Cherries
Choose options

An early-season cherry variety from Spain, developed by Zaiger's Inc Genetics in Modesto, California, and now widely cultivated across southern Spain — including the warm lowlands of Murcia, where cherry growing was until recently considered impossible. Royal Tioga is a Prunus avium cultivar bred from Bing and Royal Lee parentage, selected specifically for early maturity, large fruit size, and exceptionally firm flesh.
What sets Royal Tioga apart from many early cherries is the texture. The flesh is notably firm and crunchy — a characteristic that holds up well during transport and gives the cherry a satisfying snap when bitten. The skin is bright red, the flesh rose-coloured, and the flavour cleanly sweet with good balance. Brix levels typically sit between 18 and 20, which places them firmly in the high-sugar bracket without the cloying one-dimensionality that some sweeter varieties can carry.
Royal Tioga's low chill-hour requirement — around 500 hours — means it flowers and fruits earlier than most European varieties, arriving weeks ahead of mainstream cherry season. In Spain's southern growing regions, harvest can begin as early as mid-April, making these among the first fresh cherries of the year. That early window is part of the appeal: they arrive when the market has almost nothing else to offer in the way of fresh stone fruit.
