When to drink: Ready to enjoy now through 2027
Tasting: This exceptional old vine Zinfandel displays lovely aromas of dark fruit and blackberry with subtle pepper spice. Richly concentrated fruit flavours of blackberry, ripe plums and fresh red raspberries fill the palate, enhanced by notes of cherry, vanilla and smoke from careful barrel aging. The wine shows remarkable depth with a smooth, silky finish and well-integrated oak that creates unprecedented complexity for this approachable style.
Pairing: This versatile Zinfandel pairs beautifully with Sashi Beef or Miguel Vegara steaks, whilst its bold fruit complements Iberico Secreto with wild mushrooms. The wine's natural affinity for rich flavours makes it ideal with A5 Japanese Wagyu or Lumina Lamb. Try with aged Parmigiano Reggiano or Grana Padano DOP, or pair with hearty dishes featuring Toulouse sausages and Ceps or Morels.
Producer: Founded by John Kautz in 1948 with just 12 acres in Lodi, Ironstone Vineyards has grown into one of California's most respected family-owned wineries. The Kautz family pioneered sustainable viticulture in Lodi and built their reputation as premium grape suppliers before launching their own wines in 1989. Located in Calaveras County's mineral-rich volcanic terroir, their state-of-the-art winery carved into limestone caverns reflects their commitment to quality and innovation whilst maintaining their dedication to exceptional value and everyday approachability.
Vintage: The 2021 California vintage was hailed as "outstanding quality" by winemakers across the state. In Lodi, drought conditions led to reduced yields but fantastic concentration of flavours and colour. The moderate summer conditions and consistent growing season produced small berries with exceptional intensity. Winemakers reported some of the best tannin development and colour extraction they had ever seen, making 2021 set to be one of the best vintages in recent memory.
