When to drink: Ready to enjoy now through 2031. This Sauternes shows beautifully in its youth whilst possessing the structure and concentration for extended cellaring over decades.
Tasting: Medium gold in colour with a fresh, beautifully perfumed bouquet of orange blossom, honeyed pineapple and flowers, displaying notable botrytis character. This powerful style wine offers a rich palate with creamed pear, fig, papaya and persimmon flavours, liberally laced with crème brûlée and orange blossom honey notes. The wine shows remarkable complexity with an earthy undercurrent adding depth, whilst moderate acidity provides freshness and a ginger-tinged finish that harmoniously combines fruit and floral aromas with roasted and candied notes.
Pairing: This exceptional dessert wine pairs magnificently with Sturia Beluga Caviar or Sturia Oscietra Caviar, whilst its rich sweetness complements the salinity beautifully. Excellent with Carabineros or Tristan da Cunha Lobster preparations. The wine's complexity makes it ideal with blue cheeses like Fourme D'Ambert. For an indulgent pairing, try with White Truffle dishes or serve alongside premium chocolate desserts.
Producer: Classified as Premier Grand Cru Classé in the 1855 Classification, Chateau Suduiraut has been crafting exceptional Sauternes for centuries. Located in Preignac, the estate borders the legendary Chateau d'Yquem and benefits from similar diverse terroirs of sandy-gravel to clay soils. Since AXA Millésimes acquired the property in 1992, significant investments have restored this historic estate to its former glory. With 90 hectares under vine and meticulous hand-harvesting in multiple passes, Suduiraut produces wines of remarkable complexity that powerfully combine elegance with the concentrated sweetness that defines great Sauternes.
Vintage: The 2016 Sauternes vintage was characterised by natural richness in the berries before noble rot development. After a wet spring, the extremely dry summer produced ripe, healthy grapes. Botrytis arrived later than usual, developing in October with just two or three picking passes rather than the typical four to six. The concentrated harvest period from September to November produced wines that are fresh and friendly, though without the multiple waves of botrytis that create the most complex vintages.
