QUINTA DA PEDRA ALTA NO.3 WHITE PORT 50cl
Quinta da Pedra Alta No.3 White Port
Region: Douro Valley, Portugal
Grape: Rabigato, Gouveio, Viosinho
Rating: 92/100 International Wine Challenge, 4.1/5 Vivino
When to drink: Best served chilled and enjoyed fresh, ideally within 2-4 years of purchase. Perfect as an aperitif or in cocktails, this white port is designed for immediate enjoyment rather than long-term cellaring.
Tasting: Fresh citrus fruit and apple aromas alongside subtle liquorice and tropical notes. The palate bursts with lightly spiced candied peel, orange marmalade, peach and fresh lemon citrus flavours, wrapped in a full body with great intensity. Rich in nashi pear, pineapple and clementine character, supported by excellent acidity that leads to a crisp finish with herbal hints and elderflower notes, creating a beautifully balanced off-dry style.
Pairing: This versatile white port pairs exquisitely with Sturia Oscietra Caviar, where its citrus freshness complements the caviar's minerality. Excellent as an aperitif with Shark Bay Prawns or Tiger Prawns, whilst its sweet-tart balance makes it perfect with Carabineros. Try with aged Parmigiano Reggiano or serve over ice with fresh orange and tonic as a refreshing long drink. The wine's tropical character also pairs beautifully with melon and premium cured meats.
Producer: Quinta da Pedra Alta represents a remarkable collaboration between international winemaking expertise and Portuguese tradition. Located in the heart of the Douro Valley's Cima Corgo sub-region, this historic estate uniquely holds three original 18th-century Marcos Pombalinos granite markers placed by the Marquis of Pombal to demarcate the region's finest vineyards. Under new ownership since 2018, the 35-hectare property combines the expertise of resident winemaker João Pires with Australian consultant Matt Gant from the renowned Barossa Valley. Their diverse vineyards, ranging from 230-550 metres altitude across varied terraced slopes, allow for exceptional expression of indigenous Douro varietals.
Vintage: This non-vintage white port showcases the estate's commitment to consistency and quality. The grapes from their highest vineyards are picked early morning and pressed immediately upon arrival at the winery. Kept cool throughout the winemaking process to preserve vibrancy and freshness, this modern interpretation of white port demonstrates how traditional Portuguese fortification methods can create contemporary, accessible wines perfect for today's drinking occasions.
