Region: Primitivo di Manduria DOCG, Puglia, Italy
Grape: Primitivo (100%)
Rating: 90/100 Falstaff
When to drink: Ready to enjoy now through 2032. This sweet wine shows beautiful integration in its youth whilst possessing the structure and concentration for extended cellaring. Best served slightly chilled at 14-16°C.
Tasting: Intense ruby red colour with brilliant purple highlights and garnet hues. Rich and complex bouquet with notes of dried figs, dates and black cherry jam, enhanced by delicate spicy notes and hints of overripe fruit. Harmonious and balanced with surprising freshness, accompanied by sweet and supple tannins. The palate reveals candied fruit, honey and chocolate notes with pleasant hints of spices and liquorice. Full-bodied with a long, persistent finish that displays a beautiful touch of liquorice and warming alcohol.
Pairing: This exceptional dessert wine pairs magnificently with premium chocolate desserts or aged cheese. Excellent with Blue Cheeses, whilst its rich sweetness complements almond pastries and traditional Italian dolci. The wine's complex fruit character makes it perfect with vanilla or candied fruits.
Producer: Masseria Borgo dei Trulli is an agricultural estate established in the finest wine-growing areas of Salento, particularly in Sava, Manduria, and Maruggio in the province of Taranto. Located in the Roselle district of Maruggio, just 5km from the Ionian Sea, the estate takes its name from the region's distinctive trulli saraceni scattered across the landscape. Built with respect for local traditions, the modern winery harmoniously combines state-of-the-art technology with a carefully restored historic masseria constructed from traditional tufo stone, creating a beautiful fusion of innovation and heritage.
Vintage: The 2022 vintage represents the pinnacle of traditional Apulian winemaking. The Primitivo grapes were hand-harvested after natural appassimento on the vine, allowing them to achieve exceptional sugar concentration. This DOCG designation requires grapes to be dried either on the vine or on special racks, with fermentation controlled at specific temperatures to stop the process before all sugars convert to alcohol, leaving natural residual sweetness. The wine was then aged in French and American oak barrels, creating this elegant expression of Puglia's ancient winemaking heritage. This wine is only made in selected vintages where the quality is good enough and usually only produce a few hundred bottles.
