ROSCOFF ONIONS
Origin: Roscoff, Brittany, France
Season: August - April
Roscoff Onions AOC - Premium Brittany Pink Onions
These coveted Roscoff onions from Brittany hold prestigious AOC (Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée) protection, guaranteeing their authenticity and exceptional quality. Distinguished by their characteristic pink-tinged skin and remarkable sweetness, these premium onions have been celebrated by French chefs for generations and represent one of France's finest culinary treasures.
Cultivated exclusively in the unique maritime climate and mineral-rich soils of Brittany's northern coast, Roscoff onions benefit from the perfect combination of sea air, coastal climate, and distinctive terroir. This exceptional growing environment produces onions with firm, juicy flesh that contains unusually high levels of natural sugars, creating their signature sweetness and complex flavour profile.
The onions offer a perfect balance of sweetness and mild pungency, with an extraordinary complexity that sets them apart from ordinary varieties. Their high mineral content, absorbed from the coastal soils, provides a satisfying depth of flavour that becomes more pronounced when cooked.
The natural sugars in Roscoff onions caramelise beautifully when cooked, creating rich, golden colours and intensely sweet flavours. This characteristic makes them particularly prized for applications where the onion's sweetness is meant to shine through and complement other ingredients.
These versatile onions excel in various preparations. Slow-roasting them whole concentrates their natural sweetness and creates a magnificent side dish. When thinly sliced raw, they provide a surprisingly mild onion flavour that enhances salads without overwhelming delicate ingredients. They are essential for creating authentic French onion soup, where their exceptional flavour truly showcases the quality difference that AOC protection represents.
For an elegant preparation, create a classic onion confit by cooking them gently with butter and a splash of white wine, allowing their natural sweetness to develop into a luxurious accompaniment for meats and cheeses.
Roscoff onions are grown by traditional farmers in the coastal fields around the historic port town of Roscoff. These dedicated producers follow strict cultivation practices established over generations, maintaining the traditional methods that have earned these exceptional onions their protected designation status and preserved their unique characteristics for future generations.
