Tasting: This exceptional Chardonnay reveals ripe yellow peach, sweet lemons and citrus blossoms, complemented by notes of nuts and oak. Medium to full-bodied with a creamy, expansive mid-palate, it shows vibrant floral notes, tangerine and riverstone minerality. The crisp acidity provides backbone and carries through to a lingering, spicy finish. Matured for 11 months in French oak (23% new), lending subtle vanilla notes without overwhelming the fruit.
Pairing: Pairs beautifully with Ōra King Salmon with citrus beurre blanc, or Chilean Sea Bass in light cream sauce. Excellent with grilled Shark Bay Prawns, Fort Saint Antoine Comté or aged Parmigiano Reggiano. For luxury, serve with seared Alaskan Black Cod topped with Chanterelles and Truffle Pecorino.
Producer: Shannon Vineyards sits within the Kogelberg Biosphere in Elgin Valley, where morning mists from the Palmiet River create ideal winemaking conditions. Brothers James and Stuart Downes honour their Irish heritage whilst pushing South African winemaking boundaries. The Oscar Browne vineyard combines three Chardonnay clones, each vinified separately before blending to create this complex expression of Elgin terroir.
Vintage: 2021 began with a cool winter and beneficial rains. The chilly spring delayed budburst, whilst the moderate summer allowed grapes to develop exceptional aromatics and retain perfect acidity. This extended growing season in Elgin resulted in wines of outstanding quality and balance.
