Producer: The Prisoner rewrote the rules for the California red blend. When the first vintage was released two decades ago — an unusual assembly of some of the state's best and least conventional varieties — it changed what a blend could be, and earned cult status doing it. The wine remains a collaboration with growers across northern California, many of them partners since the beginning: the Solari Family Vineyard in Calistoga, where old-school instinct meets modern technique, and the Korte Ranch in St. Helena, farmed by four generations since before Prohibition.

Zinfandel leads, fleshed out with Petite Sirah, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Malbec — a blend built for depth rather than restraint. Full-bodied and opulent, with cranberry, blackberry and dried plum lifted by caramelised vanilla, nutmeg and toasted coconut. The palate is soft and luscious, red and black fruit balanced by integrated sweet spice, the finish smooth and long. An unapologetically bold California red.
