Producer: Château de Saint Cosme is one of the great names of Gigondas — a family estate run by Louis Barruol, the fourteenth generation to make wine on these limestone slopes. The Romans planted vines here before any château stood; the cellars below the house, hewn into the rock, date in part to the fourth century. Barruol works the estate with a light hand, holding to the principle that Gigondas earns its weight from the place rather than the cellar.
The Gigondas is the estate's flagship — Grenache-led, supported by Syrah, Mourvèdre and Cinsault, drawn from old vines on the limestone and clay slopes at the foot of the Dentelles de Montmirail. The wine carries the appellation's character with conviction: dark fruit lifted by garrigue, black olive and crushed pepper on the nose, the palate dense and structured, tannins ripe and savoury rather than insistent, the finish long and held by acidity. A serious southern Rhône built for the long haul.
