FUJI APPLES
Origin: New Zealand
Season: October - March
Fuji apples are undoubtedly among the most appealing modern apple varieties, characterised by their charming pink-speckled blush over a yellow-green background. They are crisp and juicy, with a dull white flesh that snaps cleanly. The flavour is primarily sweet and refreshing—especially when slightly chilled.
Originating from Japan, Fuji apples were developed in the late 1930s at the Tohoku Fruit Tree Research Station in Morioka, located in Iwate, a key apple-growing region on Honshu Island. The goal of the breeding program was to create a variety that would cater to Japanese preferences in terms of appearance, size, and sweetness. At that time, one of the most popular apple varieties in Japan was the American cultivar Rall's Janet (known as "Kokkoh"). To develop Fuji, numerous seedlings were created by crossing Rall's Janet with other varieties. Eventually, Fuji was released in 1962 as a cross between Rall's Janet and Delicious, originally referred to as "Apple Number 1." The original seedling tree still thrives in Morioka today.
Fuji apples have since become one of the leading apple varieties globally. They are widely cultivated, with major production occurring in Japan, China, and the USA. As a late-ripening apple, Fuji becomes available in November and December in northern hemisphere orchards, and in May and June in southern hemisphere orchards. These apples require plenty of sunshine to ripen properly.
