Producer: Le Petit Mouton is the second wine of Château Mouton Rothschild, the First Growth at the heart of Pauillac. Made from selected younger vines in the same illustrious vineyard, it is harvested into small open baskets, fermented in Mouton's oak vats and matured in barrel exactly as its elder — the same scrupulous attention to detail, the same ambition to express the elegance and richness of a great Pauillac.
First produced in 1993, the wine took its definitive name in 1994 — Petit Mouton, after Baroness Philippine de Rothschild's residence at the heart of the estate. Its label, inspired by a 1927 Art Deco drawing from poster artist Jean Carlu, deliberately echoes the artist-designed labels that have adorned Château Mouton Rothschild since 1945. Deeply coloured, richly fruited, with the close-knit, satin-smooth tannins that mark the best of the estate's work.
2019 vintage: A warm, dry winter gave way to a cooler spring, bringing flowering back to its normal timing. After a contrasting June, fine weather settled in for a sunny, hot summer, with welcome July and August showers keeping the vines in perfect balance through to harvest. The reds were picked between 18 September and 5 October under generally excellent conditions. The result mirrors nature's generosity that year — rich, deeply coloured wines with close-knit, satin-smooth tannins and real promise.
