Skrei is not ordinary cod—it's a specific seasonal catch that represents Norwegian cod at its absolute peak. After spending years feeding in the rich, cold waters of the Barents Sea, mature cod (typically 5-7 years old) make an epic 1,000km migration south to their spawning grounds in Lofoten. This journey builds exceptional muscle tone, resulting in firm, dense flesh with a superior texture that regular cod simply cannot match.
The timing is crucial: Skrei arrives in Norwegian waters from mid-January to mid-April, when the fish are in prime condition—lean, muscular, and at their flavour peak before spawning. The cold Arctic waters and the physical demands of migration create a fish with brilliantly white flesh, minimal fat, and a clean, delicate sweetness.
Historically, Skrei has been Norway's most valuable catch for over a thousand years. The name "Skrei" comes from the old Norse word "skrida," meaning "to wander"—a reference to this remarkable annual journey. Norwegian fishermen have waited for this brief seasonal window for generations, knowing that Skrei commands premium prices for good reason: nothing else tastes quite like it.
The flesh is exceptionally versatile—lean enough to poach or steam delicately, firm enough to roast or grill without falling apart. Large, thick fillets mean generous portions and even cooking. This is cod as it should be: pure, clean, and utterly superior.

VAAG Seafood was founded by a Lofoten native who grew up in Stamsund, a tiny fishing village where his mother worked at the local fishery. After moving to Oslo, he realised the fish available in city markets was nothing like the exceptional quality he'd grown up with. VAAG was born from that longing for home—a determination to bring truly fresh, premium Norwegian seafood to those who understand the difference.
Based in Svolvær at the heart of Lofoten's legendary fishing grounds, VAAG operates as a small-scale fishery with uncompromising standards. Fish is processed within hours of landing, ensuring the texture and flavour that only genuine freshness can deliver.
These premium fillets are skinless and boneless, frozen to -50°C to prevent ice crystal formation and lock in the fish's delicate texture perfectly.
Storage: Keep frozen at -18°C or colder. Once defrosted, store in the refrigerator (0-4°C) and consume within 7 days. Do not refreeze once thawed.

Can we guarantee delivery on a specific day? Unfortunately not - we rely on third-party couriers and can't control their schedules. All items leave us in perfect condition with good use-by dates, but final timing depends on the courier.

Saturday delivery is available, though please note our couriers don't operate phone support at weekends and our office is closed. For event-critical orders, a weekday delivery gives us more flexibility to help if any issues arise.
