Producer: The Barton story in Bordeaux began in 1722, when Thomas Barton left Ireland to found a wine merchant house. A century later, in 1826, his grandson Hugh purchased fifty hectares in Saint-Julien — the estate that would be classified a Second Growth in 1855. The château has been farmed by the same family ever since, raised to its modern international standing under Anthony Barton, and now in the hands of his daughter Lilian and her children — the tenth generation. An unbroken three-hundred-year stewardship, rare even in Bordeaux.
The fruit is hand-harvested, the wine matured in around 60% new French oak. The style is unmistakable — intense in colour, with a nose of black fruit lifted by spice and cedar, and a palate that runs fresh and balanced through to a finish of real depth. A wine of poise rather than power, made by a family who have never traded restraint for fashion.
2015 vintage: A return to form in Bordeaux after a difficult run, and Saint-Julien performed exceptionally. A warm, dry spring brought early, even flowering; a hot June settled the crop, and the summer that followed gave fruit of real concentration without losing freshness. Merlot was harvested 19–22 September, Cabernet from 28 September to 5 October under fine conditions. The result is a classical Saint-Julien — intense, fresh, delicate, structured for the long haul.
