Birds Eye Chilli Pepper
The bird chilli is one of the most powerful chillies in the world. Also called Pili-pili, this little red pepper is harvested in Uganda ("the pearl of Africa"). Its scientific name is Capsicum frutescens and is part of the Solanaceae family. It is also cultivated in Madagascar, Congo and Zanzibar and Mexico.
This powerful pepper gives off a very strong and sweet flavour. It is used to spice up sauces, rougail dishes, grills, fried vegetables or soups.
Add it whole in your casseroles (no more than a hot pepper!) Or in your pizza oil. Avoid handling it with bare hands. Prefer to use gloves. Avoid all contact with eyes.
