Combining grenache, shiraz and mourvèdre grapes, this wine from Charles Melton takes inspiration from the wines of the southern Rhone valley in France. The name of the wine, Nine Popes, is a play on Châteauneuf-du-Pape, the most famous wine from that region.
The 2018 vintage of Nine Popes is made up of almost 70% fruit from Charles Melton's 1927 plantings of Bush Vine Grenache and Shiraz in the Rowland Flat garden. The remaining fruit is from the Kirche vineyard, the winery block, and the Matchoss vineyard in Eden Valley. Grenache is the predominant grape, with Shiraz and a small amount of Mataro to balance the Grenache perfumes. The wine was aged in 70% French oak and 30% American oak barriques on lees for 30 months, with 25% new oak providing a gentle kiss of cedar complexity.
The 2018 vintage provided almost ideal conditions for all three grape varieties. The Grenache was fully fragrant, the Shiraz was balanced but rich, and the Mataro had a small, berried explosion of spice in each bunch. When tasting Nine Popes, you can expect chewy dark fruits, juicy berries, and plums, with a prickle of pepper, aromatic fennel, and touches of tangy oak and flint. This is a many-layered wine of substance destined for a long life.
